Couples and Family Therapy
Couples are challenged differently than individuals and require working in a two-fold process.
First of all, every couple brings into their present relationship aspects of their own past history. Things like their own family culture; prior choices they've made along with the consequences of those choices; previous relationships and the joys or pains of those attachments; and of course, the way these past items have impacted them and shaped their worldview and how they interact with it and others.
Secondly, as individuals with a past they operate in a present-day mutual interactive feedback loop with their partner in an interchanging cause and effect which contributes to the environment that exists between them.
All people carry their past into the present, and nowhere is this felt and seen than when two people who are trying to create a hopeful future get stunted in their efforts by a difficult past.
It's important for couple's to find a therapist who understands this phenomena and is able to incorporate both partners individually and collectively as equal participants in their shared problems. It's equally necessary that the therapist be able to aid in the processes for achieving observable improvement, growth and healing without judgment or partiality; both on the individual level as well as life companions.
As such, they require a therapist who has the specialized education and training to work effectively with this dynamic. To do so, sometimes it is necessary for the clinician to point out incongruencies between beliefs and actions or to address rigid or unhealthy paradigms that inhibit the partnership individuals in relationships claim they want to have, but are stuck in habits that produce contrary results.
A delicate balance of respect and genuine concern must exist in a setting where a couple can be confronted about their personal and shared issues which produce their difficulties so that they can arrive at a better place between them.
It's also important to note that families are also hugely impacted by the unaddressed issues that couples or parents struggle with. As such, I also choose to work at helping families and their respective members reconnect and restore their relationships when they find themselves struggling with the ones they love or facing generational challenges.
Please reach out so we can discuss your shared challenges and create a path to a better life as partners.
