Career and Educational Experience
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor certified by the Texas Behavioral Health Executive Council (license no. 71257).
I began my career as a therapist and addictions counselor at Tarrant Youth Recovery Campus working with at-risk adolescents before obtaining my masters degree in Community Mental Health Counseling from the University of North Texas. I have successfully served individuals who are experiencing compulsive behaviors at Sante Center for Healing and Mesa Springs Behavioral Health Hospital. I also continue to broaden my knowledge in the field of compulsive behaviors to help people struggling with them by getting additional training in Self-Esteem coaching and other areas associated with this mental health issue.
My style is one of non-judgmental compassion, respect, warmth and genuineness. I utilize complimentary therapy techniques and approaches drawn from insight-oriented therapy, systems theory and trauma and empowerment models while incorporating psycho-educational components to provide my clients with a well-rounded therapeutic experience. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor.
On a personal note, I was born in Denver, Colorado. I am married with two children and enjoy spending time with my family, watching movies, traveling and the arts. I'm also involved in designing and building theater sets for schools here in North Texas.

Two years ago I became severely depressed and was admitted to a behavioral health hospital. I had been compulsively spending my entire adult life and I could no longer deal with my debilitating shame. After being evaluated, I landed in a group for addicts. I couldn’t understand why that group and not the group for depression, but there I was and at the age of 58, after years of going to doctors for help and being misdiagnosed, I finally had an answer. I am an addict and Joe Koos is an addiction therapist, a highly skilled, highly experienced therapist. I was in Joe’s group for two months and in that time, he walked our entire group, a group with many types of addiction, through the nature of addiction. We went back to the painful experiences we had as children and learned that those of us with “addictive” brains, assuage our childhood pain through addiction. He helped us understand where the pain started and how that pain manifested. He educated us on the emotional cause of addiction, and just as importantly, on the science of why our brains turn to addiction as a way to cope. Joe gave me the gift of understanding who and why I am and he gave me the tools to move forward into a healthy life. If you are suffering with any type of addiction, Joe can and will give you back your life. He is, without a doubt, a Hall-of- Famer therapist."
